La Embajada Argentina en Irlanda dió su auspicio a la obra de la famosa violinista y directora de orquesta irlandesa Fionnuala Hunt en su proyecto de grabar y editar su CD "Tangos and Dances" con música argentina que va desde Gardel a Piazzolla y otros autores modernos. La presentación se realizó en el National Concert Hall de Dublin con gran éxito y amplia difusión.

Tangos and Dances is very much Fionnuala Hunt's project. She is soloist and director and is also responsible for the arrangements and transcriptions. Her violin is eloquent -- flirtatious, languorous, romantic, reminiscent, passionate, pleading, and charming in turn -- but is not overbearingly centre-stage the whole time. The backings are competent and, for better or for worse, generally conventional.

The tangos themselves are varied in tempo and mood, and some simpatico extras broaden the range. The Spanish Dance (Andaluza) of Granados, perhaps best known as a guitar piece, is one. There is also a waltz by Piazzolla and, as a codetta to the 'genuine' items, Hunt's whimsical cross-cultural trifle. It does spend as much time introducing the tango to the Irish hornpipe as marrying them off, but it is fun.

Tango is as famous for its fire as for its sensuality but the latter dominates here. Some tracks, in fact, are rather sugary, especially (for w hatever reason) the familiar older items such as Andaluza [listen -- track 5, 0:00-0:48]. More fire is evident in Varvelho's Tiempos Inciertos [listen -- track 7, 0:00-1:14] and Ziegler's Desde Otros Tiempos but Ginastera's Dance of the Graceful Girl [listen -- track 11, 5:00-6:09] is again sweet and dreamy.

More detached playing and stronger accentuation would have been enough to lift other items out the sedentary zone, but perhaps that was not Hunt's intention. As it is, the album is relaxing and eminently listenable without demanding the hearers' full attention.

Astor Piazzolla, with just three of the thirteen tracks, is not as heavily featured as one might have expected. The other composers are e ach represented by a single track; besides those I have already mentioned we hear Albeniz, Rodriguez, Gade (Jealousy), Bragato and Gardel. If this is a sign the tango fad has begun to move beyond Piazzolla, Gardel is a name to watch: a superstar in his time and still idolised in Argentina, he may begin to receive more recognition outside his homeland.

There are always little grumbles. If one doesn't already know who the 'RTE Concert Orchestra' are, one will not find out from the CD cover or booklet, which seems a bit unfair to a highly professional group. The 'bonus DVD' is simply an anodyne ten-minute promotional interview, worth almost exactly what it costs. Finally, some titles are translated and some don't need it, but some aren't and do. I think 'Tiempos inciertos' means 'Unsettled times' but it would be nice to be sure. Never mind, at least the grumbles are not about essentials. The music, the performances and the recording are all fine.

Fionnuala Hunt has an international career as soloist, Music Director of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, and guest leader of the LSO and a range of other orchestras from Moscow to Melbourne. Just why a Viennese-trained Irish violinist should choose to dedicate three years to researching, arranging and recording the music of the tango is unclear, but we can be glad she did.

Desde sus comienzos en el arrabal y en ámbitos prostibularios, hasta su asentamiento en elegantes salones porteños y su conquista de los más importantes escenarios del mundo, el tango asoció a su música, nacida de la mezcla de ritmos, y a su poesía, melancólica, desesperada o de cuño social, una larga lista de nombres de artistas e intérpretes que hicieron de nuestra música ciudadana uno de los más entrañables puntales de Buenos Aires.

A fines del siglo XIX, guitarristas primero y luego modestos tríos de violín, guitarra y flauta lograron imponerlo en los bailes frecuentados por modestas parejas. Con el tiempo, el tango llegó a integrar los repertorios de las más populares salas de baile del Centro.

A mediados de la centuria pasada, y ya a través de formaciones orquestales cada vez más populares, el tango logró su máximo apogeo. Durante todos aquellos primeros años, esas piezas, que intentaban expresar el sentimiento y la emoción de su público, sirvieron para lanzar a la popularidad a importantes músicos quienes, casi en su mayoría, provenían de hogares humildes y que comenzaron a obtener un éxito clamoroso y, décadas antes, impensado.

Presentar en un libro toda la historia del tango, repasar la vida y la actividad artística de cada uno de sus creadores e internarse en sus anécdotas es, sin duda, una tarea audaz, que requiere de paciencia y amor por el detalle.

Sin embargo, Ernesto J. Abálsamo, periodista de larga trayectoria en diarios y revistas, no se dejó amilanar por el desafío y con enorme pulcritud y afán de investigación, logró componer, en Crónicas de tango, un volumen rico en recuerdos y relatos vivaces, que resumen aspectos de la vida y de la obra de músicos y de cantantes. También se detiene en subrayar la importancia que, ya en la actualidad, el tango tiene como elemento cultural de nuestro país y de su imagen en el mundo.

"Negar la argentinidad del tango es un acto tan patéticamente suicida como negar la existencia de Buenos Aires", dijo en una oportunidad Ernesto Sabato.

Fiel a esta consigna, Abálsamo, porteño de Boedo, alimenta estas páginas con nombres de artistas entrañables que, desde sus partituras o desde sus voces, llevaron nuestra canción ciudadana a los más diversos escenarios. Eduardo Arolas, Agustín Bardi, José María Contusi, Ricardo Tanturi, Azucena Maizani y Enrique Delfino; los inigualados y más cercanos Aníbal Troilo, Rubén Juárez y Julio Sosa, todos quienes aportaron algo o mucho al tango figuran aquí para rescatar no sólo la historia de un ritmo musical, sino la de toda la porteñidad.

Carlos Gardel y Astor Piazzolla, con su estilo inconfundible y siempre discutido, están, por supuesto, también presentes en estas evocaciones. Y no faltan los nombres de los escenarios internacionales en los que el tango impuso sus viriles acordes, ni los lugares en los que nació al éxito y a la consideración popular. Tan entretenido como sabio en sus relatos y cálido en sus evocaciones, Crónicas de tango se transforma en una historia que, tanto para el profano como para el apasionado por el tema, abrirá una amplia senda de conocimientos y evocaciones.

El maestro Jorge Vernieri, prestigioso pianista argentino radicado en los Estados Unidos, al frente de su conjunto, integrado por Lautaro Greco (bandoneon), Washington Williman (primer violin), Leonardo Williman (segundo violin), Claudio Melon (Viola), Patricio Villarejo (Cello), David Pojomousky (Double Bass) y Héctor Pineda (Double Bass), acaba de editar once temas, compuestos, arreglados y conducidos por el mismo Vernieri.

Los títulos son sugerentes y es un verdadero placer oirlos. “Aquí va”, “Tango,¿Por qué no?”, “Cadencia”, “Mi rumbo”, “Por eso”, “Contorno de Tango”, “Maraña”, “Huellas y raices”, “Latitud 34.35/ Longitud 58.22 W”, “Bajo perpetuo” y “Dilema”.

Victor Lavallen escribe en la presentación: “With a master degree in music, Jorge has been en excellent pianist anda composer. Here are some of his songs with new ideas but with the esssence of tango. You will enjoy hearing his compositions”.

Añade: “Jorge is also mentioned in the book titled “The book of tango”, by Horacio Ferrer as one of the best pianist in the world. Jorge has also conducted many musical groups and has been a part of a spectacular Brodways musical, “Forever Tango” produced by world know Mr. Luis Bravo for the last nine years”.

Héctor Pineda, reconocida autoridad tanguera residente en los Estados Unidos, expresa: “Jorge Vernieri   (Pianist) the recipient of many awards for excellence in performance, he is not only a master pianist, but also a creative composer, arranger and orchestra leader. He started his musical training at the age of seven in Argentina.

At ten he was admitted to the “Manuel de Falla” Buenos Aires Conservatory from which he graduated with a master of music degree at the age of eighteen he turned professional at fifteen and played with orchestra such as Eduardo del Piano, Lezica-Lavié, Armando Pointier, Miguel Caló and many others.

He also recorded with the renowned Lucho Gatica.he performed post-gradate studies on piano and composition at the Puerto Rico conservatory with J.M. Sanroma.

He joined “Forever Tango” in Toronto in 1996. Before moving to United States, Mr. Vernieri toured extensively through; Latin America playing recitals as a concert pianist and performing with bands and orchestras in Buenos Aires, Mexico city, Bogotá, Puerto Rico, Japan, china, Europe, ect.

He is equally capable of playing as a classical music performer, or a popular music player he has performed on TV –radio-concerts halls, night clubs. He has also performed as a soloist in Toronto –Montréal – Las Vegas. Jorge lived for many years in Los Angeles, where he played with Lalo Schifrin and the late Henry Mancini and other famous musicians.

In Georgia Mr. Vernieri, was giving concerts at the university of Athens and Emory, and in salt lake city at BYU. He is a member of the chamber of orchestra in New York and also in Florida.  He also gave concerts of classical music and tango with the youth Camerata Orchestra. While living in Las Vegas for five years Mr. Vernieri was the pianist for the Tropicana “Follies Berger” and the “lido Due Paris” at the Stardust and the “magic violin”at the Dunes hotel”.

    Before  coming  to  this  country , George  Vernieri  toured  extensively  through  Latin  America  giving concerts  as  a  recital  pianist  and  playing  with  bands  and  orchestras  from  Buenos  Aires  to  Mexico City  and  Bogotá  to  San  Juan (Puerto Rico)  playing  on  TV , radio , concerts  halls , resort  hotels  and  night  clubs as he  is  equally  capable  of  giving  a  great  rendition  of  a  classical  piece  or  a  popular  tune .

In  Toronto  and  Montreal  he  has  been  featured  many  times  as  a  soloist . Also  in  Los  Angeles where  he  performed  various  concerts  as  well  as  private  gatherings  for  Lalo  Schifrin  and  the  late  Henry  Mancini .

En una nueva visita a la Argentina, el saxofonista y compositor argentino Bernardo Monk, radicado en los Estados Unidos presentó en el Jazz Club, Bolivar 852, San Telmo, Buenos Aires,música de su primer CD “Estación Buenos Aires” (2004) y anticipó parte del material de su próximo álbum a grabarse el año entrante.

Desde una perspectiva tanguera, Monk logra una original combinación con algunos elementos del jazz. Forman también parte del repertorio algunos temas cantados por Monk con letras originales de corte actual.

El grupo en Bs. As. está integrado por Bernardo Monk (Vientos y voz); Abel Rogantini (piano); Leonardo Ferreyra (violín); Matías González (bandoneón) y
Juan Pablo Navarro (contrabajo).

Este músico argentino, quien reside en Boston, Estados Unidos, desde 2001, ganó junto al pianista Octavio Brunetti el premio al mejor dúo en el Primer Concurso Internacional de Tango de Nueva York 2004. Egresado del prestigioso Berklee College of Music como instrumentista, Bernardo Monk ha ganado diversos premios durante su estadía en Berklee y ha trabajado con destacados músicos del ambiente local en distintos estilos. Su grupo en Boston, “MassTango” se ha presentado en los más populares clubs de jazz de Boston y Nueva York como así también en festivales, milongas, universidades, museos  y centros culturales de los Estados Unidos.
